An Asia-Pacific regional educational event, “Young Professionals Mixer”, was hosted in parallel with the 9th International Membrane Science and Technology Conference (IMSTEC) at the Adelaide Convention Center on December 6, 2016. It was sponsored by the Young Leaders Program (YLP) of the International Desalination Association (IDA). The aim of the event was to engage and inspire young professionals in the membrane and water sectors, while increasing exposure for the IDA YLP program, and promoting desalination and water reuse as a career choice. About 40 students and early career researchers under the age of 35 from universities and organizations around the world participated in the event.

The event opened with a talk by Dr. Xing Yang, a current IDA YLP committee member and lecturer at the Institute of Sustainability & Innovation (ISI) at Victoria University. Dr. Yang presented the audience with the benefits of being part of the desalination industry and global network of IDA, and an overview of the mission and activities of IDA YLP. An overwhelming response was received from the audience regarding the YLP Program and membership registration. The event concluded with a networking reception and poster session, a platform for young professionals to network, learn about exciting developments in the membrane and water industry, and share their own experience and perspectives.
