YLP at the 2018 Young Water Leaders Summit Singapore International Water Week

The Young Leaders Program (YLP) of the International Desalination Association (IDA) participated in the Young Water Leaders Summit (YWLS) hosted by the National Water Agency (PUB) of Singapore as part of Singapore International Water Week (SIWW), 8-10 July 2018. The YLP was represented by two committee members: Nicholas Nelson (EU Regional Coordinator and Webinar Coordinator) and Mohamed Alhaj (Membership Coordinator).

The YWLS is the flagship event in SIWW bringing together young water leaders from diverse regions and professional backgrounds to discuss the global water challenges of our time. This summit also allows these young leaders to mingle and network with each other and with high-profile professionals in the water sectors from all over the world. Given the leadership role the IDA plays in water desalination and reuse by allowing professionals to connect with each other and develop their careers, the attendance of the IDA, represented by the YLP, in this event was highly important.

The IDA-YLP had a partnership role with PUB in co-organizing and steering one session during the first day (July 8th, 10 – 11 am):” Strategizing for Growth and the Future”. Nicholas Nelson was the moderator for this session where he discussed with Senior Minister Ms Sim Ann a number of topics on Singapore’s development and leadership role, challenges in the water sector and Singapore’s efforts in this regard, and the role of youth in addressing global water challenges. This session was followed by Q&A from the audience. The IDA-YLP also sponsored the welcome dinner which was held at the National Museum of Singapore on July 7th. During this dinner, Nicholas gave a presentation about the IDA and the YLP and about membership in the YLP and its benefits.

The YWLS was an excellent opportunity to network and promote the YLP amongst young water professionals. A number of attendees expressed high interest in the YLP and some attendees also expressed interest in collaborating with the YLP such as individuals from the Water Youth Network and the Young Water Professionals IWA.

Overall, this event was a great platform to exchange ideas, network, and promote the IDA-YLP among young water professionals.
