Mr. Juan Miguel Pinto, USA



Juan Miguel Pinto currently holds the position of Sales Manager, Desalination Americas for Energy Recovery Inc (ERI). Energy Recovery, Inc. provides energy solutions to industrial fluid flow markets worldwide. He has been involved in the water industry for more than 10 years. He joined ERI in 2004 and he played key roles through various departments such as R&D, Engineering, Project Management and Sales. He has authored and co-authored over 10 international publications.

He is Co-chairperson of the Technical Program for the 2017 IDA World Congress in São Paulo and serves on IDA’s Membership & Elections Committee for the 2015-2017 term. He has also served on IDA’s Energy Task Force and was the Regional Coordinator for Latin America/Caribbean on IDA’s Young Leaders Program Committee from 2011-2013.

Juan serves on the Board of Directors of the International Desalination Association (IDA), and is President of La Asociación Latinoamericana de Desalación y Reusó (ALADYR). Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of the Caribbean Desalination Association (CaribDA) in 2012.

Juan received an Industrial Engineering Degree from Universidad Catolica Andres Bello in Caracas, Venezuela. He also received a Certification in Master in Business Administration (MBA) and Project Management from the University of California at Berkeley. He is finishing his EMBA from University of Florida.

Mr. Greg Wetterau, USA



Mr. Greg Wetterau is a Vice President with CDM Smith in Rancho Cucamonga, California, where he works with the planning and design of membrane filtration, potable reuse, and desalination projects around the globe. He has been involved with membrane technologies since 1992, completing his Master’s thesis at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign modeling fouling and hydraulics in an ultrafiltration system.

Before joining CDM Smith, Mr. Wetterau worked at Economic and Engineering Services (now part of HDR), where he designed and permitted the first municipal membrane plant in the Pacific Northwest in Aberdeen Washington. He joined CDM in 1999 and has worked on over 60 membrane treatment facilities, ranging in size from the 375,000 m3/d Sulaibiya Advanced Water Treatment Facility in Kuwait to the award winning 3,000 m3/d Emergency Water Supply in Cambria, California. Mr. Wetterau serves as Treasurer of the American Membrane Technology Association Board of Directors and is past Chair of the American Waterworks Association Water Desalting Committee, where he led the development of the first edition Manual of Practice on Desalination of Seawater (M61).

Mr. Wetterau holds a Masters and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois, and a Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College.

Bio: Monica is a Physicist with over 11 years of experience in the Renewable Energy industry and over 10 years of experience in Desalination research. Having 10+ years of experience as an Academic, she is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) and a Doctoral Candidate at the University of the West Indies (UWI). Monica is a Director on the board of Caribbean Desalination Association (CaribDA) and co-leads the CaribDA-YLP program; she is also an active member in both the Humanitarian and Publications committees of CaribDA. Monica received her M.Phil., and B.Sc. in Physics from the UWI where she also served as project manager for the EU-funded DIREKT project. Over the years Ms. Boodhan has successfully completed numerous training courses in the areas of Renewable Energy, Desalination, Water Treatment, Smart Grids, GIS, Matlab, Maple, COMSOL and other courses related to Research, Modeling and Teaching; and has published her work in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. With over a decade of experience in organizing and managing workshops, seminars and conferences; Monica also served as a trainer in Solar Energy and Solar Distillation at various workshops across the Caribbean and Bangladesh.

Bio: Naomi Jones is a chemical engineer with over 10 years of experience in the membrane industry, primarily working in wastewater treatment and water reuse fields. She is currently a Sales Engineer for H2O Innovation, Inc., a membrane systems integrator, where her role includes strategic business development, project bidding and contract negotiation. She started her career at Hydranautics, working for over six years as an Applications Engineer in the MBR/hollow fiber R&D group, where she was involved in product development, process design, managing and operating pilot projects, full-scale start-ups and system troubleshooting. Naomi was also Co-Leader of the IDA Young Leaders Program (YLP) during the previous 2015-17 term. Naomi graduated with honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 2005.

Position: EU Regional Coordinator

Bio: Eduard Gasia Bruch is the Europe, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA) Regional Marketing Manager for Dow Water & Process Solutions (DW&PS), a global leader in sustainable separation and purification technology. In this role Gasia Bruch is responsible for identifying market-in growth opportunities, developing a robust innovation portfolio and working in close partnership with the commercial function and value center teams to effectively implement the targeted growth plans. Gasia Bruch joined the technical service and development department of DW&PS in January of 2007 where he worked on various application development projects focused on reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration membranes and provided technical service support to customers in the Mediterranean area. In mid-2012, he moved to sales assuming the roles of Key Account Manager for Israel and Commercial Large Desalination Projects Coordinator for EMEA. At the start of 2017, Gasia Bruch accepted the EMEA Regional Marketing Manager based at Dow’s Global Water Technology Center of Tarragona, Spain. Eduard Gasia Bruch holds a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Barcelona and an Executive MBA from ESADE Business School of Barcelona. He has been a member of the International Desalination organization (IDA) and the European Desalination Society (EDS) since 2010.

Bio: Magdalena Armendariz Ontiveros is currently a PhD student (biotechnology) at the Instituto Tecnologico de Sonora (ITSON). With over 8 years as a teacher at Universidad Estatal de Sonora (UES) and 2 years at ITSON in Mexico, 4 years of experience in desalination, Her area of expertise is biofouling in RO Membranes and new nanomaterials uses in RO membranes. Magdalena received her Master degree in natural resources and B.Sc. in chemical engineering from the ITSON. She has taken training courses in the areas of desalination, nanomaterials synthesis, environmental process, water treatment, research and teaching.

Muhammad Wakil Shahzad

Position: MEA Regional Coordinator

Bio: Dr. Shahzad has expertise in thermal desalination systems design and comparative economic analysis. He is involved in many desalination piloting projects designing, installation and commissioning in GCC and Asia pacific region. Currently, he is working as a scientist in Water Desalination and Reuse Centre (WDRC) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Saudi Arabia. Dr. Shahzad graduated from National University of Singapore in 2014. He has authored more than 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals and over 70 conferences. He also co-authored 3 patents, 1 book and 4 book chapters. Their innovative hybrid “MEDAD” desalination cycle won GE-ARAMCO global innovation challenge award:-water production LCC <$0.5/m3. Dr. Shahzad also deliver workshops on desalination system designing and optimization.

Position: EU Regional Coordinator and Webinar Coordinator

Bio: Nicholas Nelson is the Head of Competence Centre for Water Treatment at Omya International, a global manufacturer and distributor of industrial minerals and speciality chemicals, where he has spent the last five years developing products and processes for the remineralisation of water after desalination processes. During this time, Nicholas has co-authored 7 papers and filed 5 patents on the topic of remineralization. Prior to Omya, Nicholas studied at the University of Adelaide and later worked for Guidera O’Connor – a leading EPC contractor in Australia – in a variety of different roles, including State Manager of the Perth office, as well as a Project Manager and Commissioning Manager for a number of major infrastructure projects for the Western Australian Water Corporation and SA Water.

Bio: Ms. Churman is a lead water/wastewater engineer at GHD, based in Houston, Texas, USA. She is dedicated to helping clients solve complex water challenges in the municipal and industrial sectors. She specializes in technology-driven solutions, and has broad experience in technology identification, design, testing, integration, and implementation. As the recipient of the 2016 – 2017 International Desalination Association Fellowship Award, Ms. Churman collaborated with Singapore’s Public Utilities Board on efforts relating to technology adaptation and application across industry sectors. She has presented on topics ranging from advanced water treatment design to sustainability and water management in local and international forums. She is a licensed professional engineer in Texas and West Virginia.

Bio: Michael Warady has over 6 years of experience in supply chains, procurement, and water technology.  At aquaTECTURE LLC, a water-focused family office, Michael leads capital project development efforts and assists with investments into growth-stage water technology companies. Prior to his work at aquaTECTURE, Michael led international supply chain efforts for Clean Energy Associates, a solar panel procurement and quality assurance firm based out of Shanghai, China.  While there, Michael helped secure a $900 million solar panel procurement deal with Blattner Energy and NexteEra Energy. In addition, Michael was responsible for financial due diligence of over 20 Chinese solar panel manufacturers for his client SolarIf, Europe’s largest solar panel manufacturing insurance business.  Michael has also consulted on several water specific projects – including supply chain work for Oasys Water, fundraising for a 22 MGD desalination plant, and a $100 million water technology private equity fund called Mazarine Partners. Michael is a member of the International Desalination Association. He received his Bachelors degree from Duke University and his MBA from Yale University.

Bio: Mohamed Alhaj is a PhD candidate in Sustainable Energy at the College of Science and Engineering at Hamad bin Khalifa University, Qatar. He obtained in MSc in Energy Technology from the National University of Malaysia in 2014 and his BEng in Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Nottingham in 2012. Mohamed’s current PhD research focuses on steady-state modeling of solar-driven thermal desalination systems and life cycle assessment. Bio: Kamakshi is currently a Technology Development Engineer at QUA Group, and is focused on QUA’s membrane technology commercialization and growth initiatives. She has a background of over two years in working with membrane technologies for a variety of water treatment applications and holds a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Kamakshi is actively involved with QUA’s proposals, technical advising, application development, and pre- and post- sales support of numerous projects using ultrafiltration (both ceramic and polymeric), membrane bioreactors, and electrodeionization.

He received his undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering from University of Regina with a focus on water and wastewater treatment.  Rahul is also currently enrolled in the IDA-HWU joint MSc degree program in Desalination.
